Equipment Mechanic and Groundskeeper
Springfield College invites applications for a full-time Equipment Mechanic and Groundskeeper for the Department of Facilities and Campus Services. This position is responsible for the safe, professional, reliable, efficient, environmentally-sound, and cost-effective maintenance of the grounds on the Springfield College campus.
Maintain Ground's vehicles, machinery, turf equipment, heavy equipment, hydraulic equipment, and small engines (both gasoline and diesel) in proper working condition performing all regular maintenance and repairs.
Perform routine engine maintenance to include but not limited to: checking oil and fluid levels, lubricating parts, replacing spark plugs, testing and inspecting engines for malfunctioning parts.
Repair or replace worn, defective, or broken parts, reassemble and reinstall components and engines following repairs.
Sharpening blades of all kinds.
Keep records of inspections, test results, work performed, and parts ordered and used.
Supporting the Grounds crew with landscaping and turf, garden, tree maintenance; herbicide spraying, fertilizing, seeding, and aerating, raking, weeding, and sweeping.
Performing seasonal tasks as needed, including leaf pick-up, shoveling, clearing snow and ice from walks, stairs, and pathways.
High school diploma or the equivalent, preferably in an institutional setting with three years of mechanical maintenance on vehicles, commercial grade landscape equipment, hydraulics, fractional horsepower engines, and associated equipment.
An understanding of various outdoor/grounds trades.
Ability to use standard machines, step ladders and lifting equipment.
Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job including but not limited to walking around campus, climbing stairs, ladders, scaffolds or platforms, lifting/carrying heavy objects and working in confined spaces.
Must have the ability to work independently.
Must have current Massachusetts pesticide license or the ability to obtain one within six months of employment.
Must have a valid driver's license.
Certification from the Equipment & Engine Training Council (EETC) preferred.
