Preschool Literacy Tutors
Preschool Literacy Tutors needed in Springfield. Community members, high school/college graduates, retirees, and career changers encouraged to apply. The Preschool Literacy Tutor is embedded into a classroom of children ages 3-5 to develop children's early literacy skills in preparation for Kindergarten, serving alongside a teacher. Tutors are trained in research-based early literacy strategies and collaborate with the classroom teaching staff to enhance daily literacy opportunities and conduct literacy assessments to increase the number of children on target with early reading predictors.
This is a 10-month AmeriCorps service member position with the Massachusetts Reading Corps, a Springfield College AmeriCorps Program.
Tutors receive a living allowance, rather than an hourly wage or salary. Prior to taxes, the living allowance is approximately $605 per month for part-time members and $1,253 per month for full-time members. Tutors who successfully complete their year of service will receive an education award of up to $2,887.50 (part-time) or $5,775 (full-time). The education award can be used to pay back federal student loans, and/or to pay for tuition or other educational purposes. Tutors who are 55 or older at the start of their service may choose to transfer their education award to a child, grandchild, or foster child within seven years. Various experiences welcome to apply. Experience in education preferred. High-quality training and support provided.
