Position Purpose
We're looking for a Special Sales Manager to take our books beyond the bookstore — into museum shops, wholesalers, catalogs, subscription boxes, and other specialty markets. This role will also manage Quarto’s presence on FAIRE as well as being author support for ordering and discovering new places for their books to sell. This role is perfect for a creative and relationship-driven sales professional who thrives in non-traditional environments. You’ll pitch our books to buyers who love smart, beautiful products and want to share them with their audiences.
This position is a hybrid workplace position with 3 days per week required in NYC office or Beverly, MA office.
Key Results Areas
- Identify and develop new special market accounts including:
- Museums (children’s, science, history, etc.)
- Wholesalers & Distributors in the niche markets we publish into
- E-commerce retailers and subscription boxes
- Customize pitches and proposals for each client based on their market and customer base.
- Support wide variety of independently owned stores across a variety of business types.
- Represent our list at trade shows and special sales events.
- Maintain relationships with key accounts and follow up regularly to promote new titles.
- Collaborate with internal teams to align product availability, marketing support, and sales materials.
- Track leads, sales performance, and market trends, and report on key developments.
Position Specifications
Qualifications
- 3+ years of sales experience, ideally in publishing, gift, or specialty retail.
- Familiarity with children’s books, illustrated titles, or educational products.
- A creative approach to prospecting and relationship-building.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and follow-up skills.
- Proficiency with CRMs and tools like Excel/Google Sheets.
- Enthusiastic, self-motivated, and highly organized.
- Willingness to travel occasionally to trade events and client meetings.
Bonus If You Have…
- Existing contacts in museum sectors.
- Experience selling illustrated or children’s titles.
- Knowledge of the museum, cultural institution, or non-trade book market.
- Passion for design-driven or educational publishing.
Education and Experience
Required
- Bachelors degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Communications, Management or equivalent.
Desired
- Book Publishing Experience.
- Experience working with authors .
