Job Description

Chief Scientific Officer (CSO)

Location: Boston, Massachusetts

Company Type: Early-stage Biotech | Focus: Genetic & Rare Diseases

About the Company:

Our client is a pioneering biotechnology company advancing transformative therapies for patients living with serious genetic and rare diseases. Backed by strong investors and a passionate leadership team, the company is translating cutting-edge science into life-changing treatments. With a robust pipeline of preclinical and early clinical programs, they are poised for rapid growth and seeking a visionary Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) to guide the scientific and strategic direction of the business.

Role Overview:

The CSO will be the scientific leader of the company—responsible for shaping and executing the R&D strategy, driving discovery and translational programs, and building a high-performing scientific organization. This individual will work closely with the CEO, Board, and cross-functional leaders to advance novel therapies from concept through development, while ensuring scientific excellence and innovation remain at the heart of the company.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and lead the scientific vision and R&D strategy across genetic and rare disease programs.
  • Oversee discovery, translational research, and preclinical development activities.
  • Provide strategic input into clinical development planning and regulatory interactions.
  • Build, mentor, and inspire a world-class scientific team with a culture of curiosity, collaboration, and excellence.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, partnerships, and in-licensing opportunities to strengthen the pipeline.
  • Represent the company’s science externally — with investors, partners, and the broader scientific community.
  • Partner closely with the CEO and executive team to guide strategic decision-making and corporate growth.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • PhD, MD, or MD/PhD in Molecular Biology, Genetics, or related discipline.
  • 15+ years’ experience in biotech or pharma, with a strong track record of leading discovery and early development programs in genetic or rare diseases.
  • Proven ability to translate scientific innovation into therapeutic programs and move assets through IND-enabling and early clinical stages.
  • Demonstrated leadership in building and scaling R&D organizations.
  • Strong understanding of gene therapy, RNA-based therapeutics, or precision medicine approaches.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and strategic thinking skills.

What’s on Offer:

  • Opportunity to shape the direction of a cutting-edge biotech at an inflection point of growth.
  • Collaborative and mission-driven culture focused on transforming patient outcomes.
  • Competitive executive compensation and equity participation.
