Role of a Managing Director - Client Advisory Services (CAS) Practice

The Managing Director of a Client Advisory Services (CAS) practice is a senior leadership role focused on overseeing and driving the strategic growth, operational excellence, and client success of the CAS practice within a professional services firm. This position combines leadership, client engagement, and operational management to deliver high-value, outsourced accounting and advisory services to a diverse client base.


Key Responsibilities


Strategic Leadership

  • Define and implement the vision, strategy, and goals for the CAS practice, aligning with the firm’s overall objectives.
  • Identify and develop new service offerings to meet evolving client needs and market demands.
  • Lead business development efforts, including identifying opportunities, managing key client relationships, and expanding the CAS client base.
  • Build cross functional relationships and collaborate strategically with practice leaders at the firm.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Build, lead, and mentor a multi-site team of CAS professionals, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Provide training and career development opportunities for team members to support their growth.
  • Collaborate with other firm leaders to align talent acquisition, succession and retention strategies.

Client Engagement

  • Act as a trusted advisor to clients, providing high-level financial insights, strategic advice, and guidance on business decisions.
  • Ensure exceptional service delivery by overseeing the quality and timeliness of work performed for clients.
  • Build long-term relationships with clients by demonstrating deep industry expertise and value-driven solutions.
  • Oversee the execution of CAS engagements, including financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and other outsourced accounting services.

Operational Excellence

  • Develop and implement efficient workflows, leveraging technology to enhance accuracy and productivity.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for the practice, ensuring operational efficiency and profitability.
  • Manage the CAS practice financials, including P&L, budgeting, forecasting

Market Positioning

  • Serve as the face of the CAS practice at industry events, conferences, and networking opportunities.
  • Position the firm as a thought leader by contributing to articles, webinars, and other educational content.
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes impacting the CAS space.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA, CMA, or MBA preferred).
  • 10+ years of experience in accounting, finance, or client advisory services, with a proven track record of leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire teams while managing multiple priorities.
  • Deep understanding of CAS, including financial reporting, advisory, and technology solutions (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage).
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and innovatively, with a proactive approach to identifying opportunities, driving change, and delivering impactful solutions in dynamic environments.
  • Strong business development skills, with the ability to identify opportunities and close new engagements.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
