The Scale Operator (NFSO) is responsible for facilitating all activities including grading and weighing all ferrous and non-ferrous loads coming into the Non-Ferrous/Retail (NF/R) facility. The NFRSO directs customers to appropriate unloading areas and communicates with yard personnel for inspection purposes. The NFRSO handles all calls coming into the NF/R facility regarding pricing, grading, directions, and other general inquiries. The NFRSO must acquire knowledge and information to be attentive to a widely fluctuating market.
This position operates within somewhat defined parameters. The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence in all facets of the position. Providing the highest quality product safely, effectively, and efficiently decreases accidents and errors and increase profits.
Essential Functions:
1) Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S)
a) Providing a safe environment for all employees, customers, and visitors.
b) Ensures safe work practices and equipment are always used.
c) Communicate with production employees via radio to coordinate customer assistance in specific areas.
2) Commercial
a) Pursue established list of contacts and seek out new supply sources from referrals, phone books, and cold calls.
b) Answer questions by phone and in person from actual and potential customers regarding pricing of materials and types of material accepted.
c) Maintain account contacts to promote customer service and to check on pricing and additional purchases on a regular basis.
d) Coordinate with office staff to ensure accurate and timely documentation of all purchasing transactions.
3) Operational Performance & Best Business Practices
a) Conduct scale operations and evaluate incoming products; identify contents of load; operate all scales determining weight.
b) Operate outgoing scales; identify commodity codes; compute ticket totals for payments.
4) Equipment Maintenance
a) Test all scales for accuracy on a weekly basis.
b) Coordinate housekeeping and cleanliness of scale and scale area.
5) Inventory & Quality Control
a) Ensure strict compliance with scrap acceptance policies.
b) Educate customers on scrap quality and acceptance policies.
c) Monitor scrap acceptance to ensure compliance with current regulations and policies.
6) Security
a) Assist with enforcement of port security requirements.
7) Special Projects
Performs special projects or other duties as needed or assigned.

Regular exposure to all weather conditions, and physical hazards due to the presence of heavy equipment and machinery in the yard and the presence of scrap itself. This position operates 5 to 6 days a week or as needed and requires overtime hours to perform. Dealing with multiple issue regarding scheduling, safety, and maintenance increases pressure.

Ability to: lift or carry up to 10 pounds for long periods of time, 5-8 hours per day; sit or stand. Keyboard an/or use hands for use in repetitive motion for extended periods of time, up to 3-6 hours a day; sit, bend at waist, twist upper body and/or walk for extended periods of time, up to 1-3 hours a day; climb stairs daily to reach scale house; kneel; be mobile within a confined office environment; negotiate uneven surfaces; assemble papers, paper punch, staple, file; apply sufficient force to open and close file drawers; communicate by speech and hearing in person and/or by phone in a businesslike, professional manner. Visual acuity to perform close detail work.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent. 3 or more years working experience in sales or customer service, cashiering and/or general office. Prior experience in the scrap industry helpful, but not required. This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive an automobile.
Requires knowledge of; material handling; tact and ability to communicate to people at all levels, both verbally and in writing, in a professional manner; computer skills (Windows 11, Word, Excel). Superior customer service ability: ability to perform in high traffic volume situations; oral communication and interpersonal skills; mathematical and problem-solving skills; basic negotiation skills; attention to detail and accurate; basic typing and 10-key skills; some knowledge of identifying metal alloys is helpful but not required. Ability to; manage several tasks consecutively; think logically to apply specific principles to solve practical everyday problems to deal with a variety of specific variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Work under pressure, and deadlines. Be able to deal with problems involving several specific variables in or from standard situations.
