Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Excavation Estimator to prepare accurate and competitive cost estimates for earthwork, site development, and underground utility projects. The estimator will analyze project plans and specifications, assess site conditions, and develop detailed estimates for excavation, grading, trenching, utilities, and related civil work. This role is critical in securing profitable projects and supporting successful project execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Review civil drawings, geotechnical reports, and project specifications
- Perform detailed quantity take-offs for:

- Mass excavation and grading
- Trenching and backfill
- Utilities (storm, sanitary, water)
- Roadwork, pads, and site preparation
- Analyze soil conditions, site access, haul routes, and disposal requirements
- Estimate costs for labor, equipment, materials, trucking, and subcontractors
- Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier pricing
- Develop bid proposals and participate in pre-bid meetings
- Identify risk factors such as groundwater, rock excavation, and weather impacts
- Work closely with project managers and field superintendents for constructability input
- Maintain historical production rates and cost databases
- Assist with change order pricing and value engineering
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience estimating excavation, site work, or heavy civil construction projects
- Strong understanding of earthwork operations, utility installation, and grading practices
- Ability to read and interpret civil plans, profiles, and cross-sections
- Proficiency in estimating and takeoff software (e.g., Agtek, Trimble, Bluebeam, PlanSwift)
- Solid knowledge of equipment production rates and crew sizing
- Strong math, analytical, and organizational skills
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree or certification in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field
- Experience with DOT, municipal, or commercial site development projects
- Familiarity with GPS machine control and survey data
- Knowledge of local soil conditions and disposal facilities
