Job Description
Museum of Science, Boston
Innovation and creativity come from the unique perspectives of a diverse staff. We value your perspective.
Who We Are
As science and technology increasingly shape our lives, the Museum of Science strives to equip and inspire everyone to use science for the global good while keeping up with the pace of change. Among the world's largest science centers and New England's most attended cultural institution, we engage nearly five million people a year – at Science Park and in museums around the world, in classrooms, and online.
The Museum's singular location connecting Boston and Cambridge puts us at the junction of some of the world's most influential academic institutions and industries, local and state government, schools, and the public. Trusted by each sector, we are ideally positioned to convene, inspire, and create meaningful experiences for all. Come join us on our mission to inspire a lifelong love of science in everyone and living our vision for a world where science belongs to each of us for the good of all of us.
Why We Need You
The Data Team is scaling up our personnel and infrastructure to meet the rapidly increasing analytic requests coming from stakeholders all over the Museum. We need a talented and friendly data analyst to interface with these stakeholders, understand their data needs and translate their questions into actionable tasks. They will work closely with the other analytic engineers and analysts on the team to query our data, create new metrics, and develop clear, impactful reports and data visualizations.
What You'll Accomplish
- Become an expert on the Museum's data on attendance, web traffic and marketing efforts, able to quickly respond to ad-hoc requests and questions.
- Regularly meet with Museum stakeholders from Marketing, Finance, Advancement and other groups, discuss their analytic requirements and distill those conversations into specific tickets that will meet their needs.
- Query our Snowflake data warehouse, joining and aggregating data from multiple sources to produce meaningful metrics and semantic models.
- Build reports and data visualization applications in Microsoft PowerBI, and train business users on how to best use these reports to interpret the charts and make data-driven decisions.
- Administer and "own" PowerBI workspaces, handling access and license requests, and monitoring data quality to ensure all reports are accurate and up to date.
What We're Looking For (Competencies)
- Collaboration. The data team interacts with almost every department at the Museum, and we are working to build a data community based on mutual support and open communication.
- Innovative Spirit. As we strive to embrace new technologies and analytic methods, we need to constantly ask "what next?" and "how could this be improved?" and not be afraid to try something new.
- Data Leadership. Building a culture of data literacy takes time, and we need all members of the data team to show a bias for action by proactively identifying problems or opportunities, and suggesting new data solutions
- Attention to Detail and Quality. As the saying goes: 'Garbage in, garbage out.' The data team stands as the primary line of defense to ensure the Museum's data meets all standards for quality, accuracy, relevance and security.
Desired skills include:
- SQL; experience in cloud-based data warehouses like Snowflake a plus.
- Data visualization and report development, in tools like PowerBI, Tableau, Looker or Qlik.
This is a hybrid role, so we are seeking candidates local to Boston. The Museum of Science is unable to provide any form of visa sponsorship at this time.
