Position: PREPARED FOODS ASSISTANT MANAGER

Full-time. Requires open availability, including evenings and weekends.

Status: Reports to Prepared Foods Assistant Manager

Supervises Cafe Staff

Pay Level: VIII, exempt.

Location: Northampton, MA

Purpose: River Valley Co-op has a scratch-made bakery, a production kitchen, and a made-to-order service Cafe. The Assistant Manager focuses on and provides logistical leadership to the Cafe. The Cafe produces scratch-made, fresh food daily including made-to-order sandwiches, smoothies, coffee drinks, and pizza. We specialize in natural foods that are a delicious and gorgeous celebration of world cuisines to serve a variety of dietary needs including omnivore, vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free.

Four key aspects of the job are Customer Service, Production Logistics, Food Safety, and Partnership with the Kitchen. With the complexity of our operation, the Assistant Manager establishes the culture of the Cafe service counter and focuses the daily operation to ensure efficient and swift production of delicious and consistently prepared foods that meet a wide variety of needs.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

CAFE COUNTER

  • Establish and maintain food safety procedures, following ServSafe and Massachusetts Food Code guidelines.
  • Provide and model exceptional customer service in a friendly and fast-paced environment.
  • Set production levels and schedules and ensure staff is meeting these expectations.
  • Maintain appropriate levels of all grab-and-go hot products, juices, and smoothies.
  • Establish and maintain procedures for consistency in food production, including following recipes, measured quantities for profitability, and visual presentation.
  • Establish and maintain systems for efficient production, including standards for preparing, cooking, and packaging food.
  • Establish and maintain an efficient and safe workflow from food preparation, production, and clean-up.
  • Establish and train staff on systems to ensure customer requests about allergen ingredients are met 100% of the time, without exception.
  • Establish and maintain procedures for department cleanliness, safety, and functionality, including a master cleaning schedule for equipment, and space.
  • Participate in monthly, early morning inventory.
  • Establish and maintain systems for communication within the department and from the department to the wider co-op.
  • Ensure Cafe Counter staffing is appropriate for the level of business, including writing and modifying schedules and managing payroll.
  • In partnership with the Prepared Foods Manager, create menus that keep our Cafe current with Customer needs, food trends, and the breadth of specific diet requests. Cost menu items to maintain profit goals, and monitor sales, amending menu to ensure items have earned their place financially.

STAFF MANAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT

  • Establish clear expectations for direct reports with a means to hold each other accountable to meet expectations, and offer support to meet expectations.
  • Supervise work performance and staff conduct and uphold River Valley Co-ops performance management practices of progressive disciplinary action and staff recognition as needed and following Co-op policies, procedures, labor, and legal guidelines.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and create training and development opportunities that enhance the staff's abilities and build upon their skills, knowledge, and abilities.
  • Facilitate daily, weekly, and think-tank meetings. Attend management team meetings.
  • Make staffing decisions following co-op policies.

ALL STAFF DUTIES

  • Uphold daily general management responsibilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional cooking experience.
  • 2+ years of supervisory or management level experience.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to prioritize projects and tasks.
  • Ability to work productively and independently.
  • Proven ability to set and achieve department and organizational goals.
  • ServSafe Manager Certification or equivalent.

FUNCTIONAL

  • Culinary knife skills.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Repetitive use of hands for grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation.
  • Ability to do math computations including addition, subtraction, division, fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Suite.
  • Ability to lift 60 pounds.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule, including shifts that start at 6 am, or end at 11 pm, and at least one weekend day per week.

PREFERRED

  • Demonstrated ability to work with customers and co-workers from various cultural backgrounds.
