Summary

The New England Aquarium's Teen Internship program provides job experience as well as job skills coaching and mentoring. We aim to empower and provide teens with the opportunity to become engaged in our Aquarium operations and play a key part in our conservation & education efforts.

Academic Year Teen Internship positions are open to returning teen interns who have previously completed a summer teen internship at the New England Aquarium. Please note that all teen interns are required and paid to attend ClimaTeens meetings which take place two Thursdays each month throughout the school year from 5pm-7pm. One meeting each month will take place in person at the New England Aquarium and the other meeting will take place virtually over Zoom.

Things you will need to fill out the application:

  • 3 references and their contact information. References can be New England Aquarium employees, teachers, club advisors, former supervisors, etc, but should not be family members.
  • Your short answer responses to the following questions:
    • What skills do you hope to further develop by working at the Aquarium this academic year?
    • Tell us about a time when you had the opportunity to talk about climate change or a justice issue that is important to you. Please explain who the audience was and how people responded to your conversation.

Applications will close on Sunday, September 21, 2025.

Interviews will tentatively be held the week of September 29th-October 4th.

Teen Interns will work one weekend day (either Saturday or Sunday) from October 25th/26th through June 6th/7th.

Teen Interns will be paid to attend the following Thursday night ClimaTeens meetings throughout the academic year:

Position Descriptions

Visitor Experience- one full day either Saturday or Sunday

Position: Visitor Assistant

  • Provide excellent customer service to all of our visitors through greeting and visitor interaction.
  • Help visitors have a great time during their visit by anticipating their needs and helping to make their visit smooth.
  • Rotate through positions throughout the Aquarium campus including the plaza, lobby, and exhibit spaces, and assist visitors by answering questions.
  • Learn about the animals and exhibits as well as conservation messaging.
  • Applicants must be friendly, outgoing and willing to learn.
  • Typical work week is one full day at the Aquarium (either Saturday or Sunday) and two ClimaTeens meetings per month on Thursdays from 5pm-7pm.

Interpretation and Engagement (Conservation Learning)- one full day either Saturday or Sunday

Position: Aquarium Guide

  • Work as an ambassador representing the New England Aquarium to its visitors.
  • Interpret aquarium exhibits, interacting with large numbers of people.
  • Facilitate activities at interpretive carts throughout the building.
  • Must be comfortable with public speaking.
  • Must be willing to interact with visitors of all ages, including young children and toddlers.
  • Teen Interns will receive hands on training about marine biology, Aquarium exhibits, and exhibit interpretation.
  • Typical work week is one full day at the Aquarium (either Saturday or Sunday) and two ClimaTeens meetings per month on Thursdays from 5pm-7pm.

Behind the Scenes (Open to anyone who has completed Behind the Scenes Workshop)

Position: Teen Intern 

Departments:

Interactive Exhibits: Saturday

Pinnipeds (formerly Mammals): Saturday or Sunday

Rescue: Sunday (*At Quincy Animal Care Center*)

Dive Operations: Saturday

Note: Each department has different requirements for daily tasks.  Listed below is a general idea of the job you might be doing.

  • As directed, provide daily care of assigned exhibits and life support systems according to established standards of appearance and animal care.  Responsible for feeding and administering medication regimes appropriate to animals in assigned area. 
  • Make daily observations of animals for health assessment according to established norms of animals' behavior and appearance.  Report suspected incidence of disease and/or changes in health to appropriate staff member(s).   
  • Assist in maintaining records in accordance with proper animal husbandry practices and departmental policy and monitoring water quality. 
  • Perform other position-related duties, as assigned. 
  • Typical work week is one full day (8am-5pm) at the Aquarium or at Quincy Animal Care Center for Rescue Department position only (either Saturday or Sunday depending on which department) and two ClimaTeens meetings per month on Thursdays from 5pm-7pm.
