Position Summary

The ProtoTRAK Machinist is responsible for programming, setting up, and operating ProtoTRAK CNC/manual milling machines and lathes to manufacture custom plastic components. This role requires strong knowledge of machining processes for various plastic materials and a commitment to precision, quality, and safety in every production run.

What You Will Do

  • Program and operate ProtoTRAK milling machines and lathes to produce plastic components per technical drawings and job specifications.

  • Select appropriate tooling and machine settings based on plastic material properties and job requirements.

  • Perform first-piece inspections and monitor production to ensure compliance with specifications, tolerances, and quality standards.

  • Adjust feeds, speeds, and tooling to achieve optimal surface finish and dimensional accuracy for materials such as acrylic, PVC, and polycarbonate.

  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance including cleaning and lubrication to ensure optimal machine performance.

  • Maintain accurate documentation of production runs, tooling changes, and machine maintenance.

  • Collaborate with production and engineering teams to troubleshoot issues and drive continuous improvement.

  • Follow all safety procedures to prevent personal injury and equipment or material damage.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and GD&T symbols.

  • Proficiency with precision measuring tools and inspection equipment.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship.

  • Problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and within a team environment.

  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced, high-mix, low-volume manufacturing setting.

  • Strong work ethic, dependability, and punctuality.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience operating CNC milling machines.

  • Ability to set up, operate, and make minor program edits on CNC equipment.

  • Basic familiarity with machining plastics and aluminum preferred.

  • Basic computer skills for documentation and data entry.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a CNC machining certification program or formal apprenticeship.

  • 5+ years of CNC milling experience, preferably in a job shop or custom manufacturing environment.

  • Experience producing high-precision parts with tight tolerances.

  • Familiarity with Mastercam, Fusion 360, or similar CAM software.

  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 quality systems and manufacturing best practices.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements (Disclosure)

This position requires the ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 pounds, bend, twist, and work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to machinery noise, moving equipment, and various plastic materials.
